What is root planing?

Root planing is a procedure that is appropriate for people with gum disease. Also called periodontal disease, it’s an inflammation of your gum tissue. If left untreated, it can affect all your teeth and the supporting bones.

How does gum disease form?

Gum disease usually takes some time to develop. It forms when gum tissue becomes inflamed, leading to pockets of space between the gum and the tooth root. This space is called a periodontal pocket, and its difficult-to-reach spot makes it an ideal place for bacteria to thrive. Along with scaling, root planing is an effective method of treatment for the more severe stages of gum disease.

What can I expect at the procedure?

We’ll start by gently removing the calculus and plaque on the surface of the tooth root and inside of the periodontal pocket. We pride ourselves on pain-free dentistry, so you’ll be properly numbed and won’t feel a thing. The procedure takes about 60-90 minutes to complete. You may be prescribed antibiotics, and we’ll advise you on mouthwash rinses and other home care.

Please note that mild discomfort in the first few days after treatment is normal. To maintain your oral health, good oral hygiene habits are essential.
